Helmholtz Sustainability Policy

The Helmholtz Association made a Helmholtz sustainability policy at our General Assembly on 15/16 September 2021. The Helmholtz Association aims to ensure excellence in research, sustainable development and climate protection. Sustainable action is not only a social obligation, it is also an opportunity to ensure the longterm success and attractiveness of the individual centres and the Helmholtz Association as a whole.

The Helmholtz Association's commitment to sustainable development

The Helmholtz Association made a commitment to sustainable development at our General Assembly on 15 September 2020. This commitment goes hand in hand with our intention to be proactive in this arena, taking on activities with a view to developing, implementing and reporting on measures and goals for the sustainable development of the Helmholtz Centres and the Helmholtz Association as a whole.

Key Issues Paper: Sustainable Procurement in the Helmholtz Association

In the procurement, materials and equipment management committee, the purchasing managers have agreed on the following key points for sustainable procurement in of the Helmholtz Association (in German). The starting point is a common understanding of sustainability and sustainable procurement. Necessary prerequisites for sustainable procurement in the centers are shown, goals are defined and possible measures for implementation are suggested. The centre-specific implementation should be carried out individually, taking into account the respective circumstances.

Recommendations for action for the 3rd Helmholtz Sustainability Summit

The Helmholtz Sustainability Forum Working Group has reviewed the individual results in detail and formulated recommendations for action. These recommendations for action (in German) were presented to the participants at the wrap-up of the third Helmholtz Sustainability Summit. So that these are also available at the administrative level of the Helmholtz Association. The centers can use the recommendations to develop and implement their own measures.

Recommendations for action for the second Helmholtz Sustainability Summit

The moderators of the respective workshops documented and digitized the results after the summit. These compilations were then processed in detail by the colleagues from the Sustainability Forum working group, who were involved in the planning and implementation of the workshops. The results of the respective workshops were brought together in several iterations. This recommendations (in German) was briefly presented at the last meeting of the administrative boards of the Helmholtz Association and then sent to these board colleagues. The results and recommendations for action are now available in every center. The centers can use the paper independently to promote their sustainable development along the topic areas of the workshops center-specifically.

Helmholtz Sustainability in Action brochure

The Helmholtz Sustainability in Action brochure (in German) contains case studies from all Helmholtz centres, set out according to the five functional areas of the LeNa report. These examples were compiled from initial findings by the Helmholtz Sustainability Forum Working Group, which was founded in April 2018.
